Flowers Around Town in May

Sunday, 18 May 2025

May is peony season. Long lived, cold tolerant, ignored by deer and rabbits.
This well established peony on Ridge Road is reliable, repeating each year.

Purple rhododendrons are everywhere. But this extravagant shrub,
stretching to the second story windows, is the most massive I see.

There is a trio of bottlebrush buckeye, Aesculus pavia, that I have been admiring for several years. They are off to the side of a traffic circle. Obviously too hazzardous to pull over at the edge of the roadway for photographd. Could Himself drop me off, keep circling until I was done, the retrieve me? Not likely. What to do . . . I turned down the street before the traffic circle. Discovered it leads to the Raritan Township municiple offices. Pulled in, went as far to the back of the parking lot as was feasible. And voilà! a safe space to take my pictures.

Bottlebrush buckeye, Aesculus pavia, is a lovely small tree with
elegant panicles of pink flowers. That roadway is the traffic circle.

Panicles are terminal, appearing at the tips of the branches.

A closeup reveals a small yellow blotch on each flower. No doubt it serves to attract pollinators.

I have been on this road to the main county library multiple times,in all four seasons, year after year. But I cannot recall ever before having noticed this wisteria behind the Cooperative Extension Service offices. Wisteria run rampant, to say the least.

Which goes to prove that one must keep their eyes open to see what may be observed.

Such as a veritable waterfall of wisteria, tumbling down from high on a tree.
And no, the shed is not the extension services office. Equipment storage pehaps.
